Roadshow DACH: Buses as the Key to Sustainable Tourism

Moderated by Lisa-Marie Coels (EuroBus), panellists Iris Hegemann (German Tourism Association), Sebastian Tanzer (Triply) and Manuel Lampe (Bus Austria) discussed key aspects of sustainable mobility planning, including digital visitor guidance, intelligent mobility analyses and the underestimation of buses.

One key topic was the underestimation of climate-friendly travel in the sustainability debate. While many destinations are creating sustainable offerings locally, travel to these destinations is often still dominated by cars. However, buses, being the most environmentally friendly form of motorised transport, offer significant potential for both individual and group travel.

The discussion made it clear that new, data-driven strategies and collaboration between all stakeholders, including bus operators, service providers and cities, are required. This is the only way to create a connected, flexible mobility offering that meets the needs of modern travellers. Digital tools, AI-supported planning and emotionally engaging travel experiences allow buses to play to their strengths.

The topic of social sustainability was also addressed: buses foster community spirit, facilitate encounters and promote inclusion, particularly among younger and less mobile demographics. Those who understand their target group can create tailor-made offers. This opens up new markets and offers real added value, including for rural regions and structurally weak areas.

This roadshow stop is encouraging: with openness, cooperation and technological progress, buses can play a central role in the tourism mobility mix as low-emission, flexible, experience-oriented partners in the mobility transition.
