Fire protection for bus depots

The world's largest fire tests involving lithium-ion batteries in bus depots have led to the development of a highly effective firefighting system specifically designed for electric bus depots.

Efficient fire protection concepts for bus depots must consider the risks posed by alternative drive systems. Against this backdrop, FOGTEC Brandschutz, the University of Wuppertal, the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, IFAB Ingenieure für angewandte Brandschutzforschung, the Studiengesellschaft für Tunnel und Verkehrsanlagen (STUVA) and the Verband Deutscher Verkehrsunternehmen (VDV) launched the joint research project “SUVEREN_4_Depots”. The focus was on the storage of lithium-ion batteries (LIB). In July 2023, the project participants conducted what they believe to be the world's largest LIB fire tests for bus depots in a special test facility. The aim was to develop a firefighting system that can effectively protect modern vehicle depots, including those for e-buses, against fires. The system has now been completed, with the first projects already underway.
